The Northwood Staccato contains a number of childhood and local inspirations for sculptor John Vassar House. In fact, the two initial titles for the sculpture were homage to Paul Bunyan and the Northwest Passage. These themes are detectable in the forms, textures and movement of this piece.

From 1965 to 1967 sculptor John Vassar House was a Visiting Lecturer in Sculpture at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. In April 1966 he held an art show of his sculpture at the Dayton’s Gallery in Minneapolis.
