Three different sculpture versions of “Wheels” were created by John Vassar House JVH).

“Wheels Chariot” in 1971, was inspired by the Roman chariot wheels and the kinetic deformation of the wooden spokes in the U turns of the Roman circuses. Three different proposals were made under the idea of a monument titled “All roads lead to Rome” to be placed at the entrance to the city on Via Aurelia. The smallest proposal was “Wheels Chariot”, a monumental sculpture that was never enlarged.

“Wheels I” is the upgraded version of “Wheels Chariot” of the same year later. “Wheels I” now has to do with the deformation of car tires to maintain grip and centripetal force on the road banking. The base of the wheels reminds the forms of crankshaft and pistons.

“Wheels II” is a refined variation of “Wheels I” by JVH with improved sculptural effect.
