In the same year the Columbus underwater marker bronze monument was installed in recognition of Christopher Columbus’ landfall in the New World, John Vassar House (JVH) created a sculpture model to be placed overriding the marker with the intent to create a singular scuba diver experience. The model was never built full size.

As you may imagine, JVH was a scuba and snorkeler for many years, hence the idea of creating a downwards spiral passage to the marker.

The second given name for this sculpture is Moray, mainly because of the similarity between the sculpture and the moray body shape.

The sculpture could also be easily viewed from the surface.
